Another common problem occurs when spouses, children and others do not view the home-based business as a serious venture. According to Betty, part of changing this perception is by the business owner treating her business seriously and laying down ground rules for the family. At-home business mothers need to establish a work space and make clear to husbands and children that the area is to be treated as an office and not a dumping ground for homeless household items. In addition, she stressed the need to educate the family when and why interruptions are allowed during work time.
A businessmom often gets stuck when she avoids purchasing the equipment, supplies, or services she needs to run her business. Betty reminded the group of the adage "you need to spend money to make money."
When asked how she successfully grew her business, Betty unhesistantly responded, "Networking." Joining groups and getting involved in them were the keys to her success, and can be for many MATCH members as well. Successful networking requires entrepreneurs to "get above" the fear of competition and establish contacts to refer business to and receive referrals from. Also, business women should lose their fear of asking for referrals from current clients. By establishing goals, managing her family, spending money when needed and networking, the entrepreneurial mother can avoid common pitfalls and grow her business
